It’s an utter disgrace that one of the best teams in the country will not be participating in any one of the New Years Six Bowls. It’s an utter disgrace that one of the best teams in the country does not get the recognition it deserves after proving its worth time and time again. It’s an utter disgrace that a team that was an FCS team just a bit over three years ago doesn’t get the credit it fully deserves due to the sheer fact it’s not a ‘big school’. Ladies and gentlemen, meet Coastal Carolina. A Sun Belt Conference team led by a redshirt freshman quarterback, Grayson McCall, and head coach Jamey Chadwell. McCall, a two-star recruit coming out of high school, wasn’t even the best QB in his conference. A kid by the name of Sam Howell was just a few towns over and getting all the offers imaginable, while McCall was left with a few FCS offers. Without hesitation, McCall saw the opportunity to do something big at Coastal. The Chanticleers were a young program, with a young head coach, and an offensive playstyle resembling his offense in high school. All of this coinciding with the dream of playing at a stadium he drove by so many times as a kid on his way to the beach, Coastal seemed to be a perfect fit for McCall. And everything seemed to be going great for the Chanticleers as well. In only three years, they went from a below-average non-power 5 team to being ranked. All of this happened through a new head coach, great recruiting, and a little bit of luck. However, as the old saying goes, the harder you work, the luckier you get. Coastal Carolina is 11-0, including two huge wins against Levi Lewis and the ranked Louisiana Ragin Cajuns and future 1st round picks and Heisman hopeful, Zach Wilson and the BYU Cougars. McCall, a lanky QB with a Pat Mahomes-Josh Allen mix type present in the pocket, can move a defense with his eyes. Impressive for a young college QB. Furthermore, Coastal's star QB can escape the pocket and extend the play when needed. Grayson McCall already practicing his Heisman pose! By Nick Masuda [email protected] This combined with his amazing accuracy is a rare sight to see in college football, but it’s certainly a good one.
However, the College Football Committee decided against putting the team with the coolest mullets in college football in any of the New Years' 6 Bowl Games. Instead, they face an unranked Liberty, who are not a bad side, but it’s unfair for a team like Coastal to not be playing on the biggest stage. How on earth is anybody supposed to explain to me that a three-loss Florida team, a 2 loss Oklahoma team, and a 2 loss Georgia team are more deserving of a New Years Six Bowl game appearance than Coastal Carolina? The answer is you can’t. McCall has thrown for 2,170 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. Yes, two interceptions. In addition, McCall is a Maxwell Award Semifinalist, Davey 2020 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Semifinalist, 2020 CFPA National POTY Trophy Watch List, Manning Star of the Week (Oct. 19, 2020), Manning Star of the Week (Sept. 14, 2020), and 2020 Manning Award, Finalist It’s a disgrace that a team that played in the college football game of the year, nicknamed, Mormons (BYU) vs Mullets (Coastal Carolina), a team that beat two ranked opponents, a team that played a full schedule and went undefeated, doesn’t get a shot at one of the big bowl games this year. People talk about the money aspect, and I can assure you that more people would want to watch Coastal vs Florida or Coastal vs Oklahoma than Oklahoma vs Florida, and the same goes for the other 5 bowl games. It frustrates me that a deserving team does not get a shot while a 3 loss team does. The committee will never know just how good Coastal is unless they give them a shot at one of these games and that is the cherry on top for me. College football fans and people will good morals should be very upset over a deserving college football team not getting in. You feel for the kids who work so hard only to get rejected, you really do. It’s truly an, Utter disgrace.
